Union Cabinet Approves New Education Policy 2020: Major Reforms & Key Highlights
The Union Cabinet has officially approved the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), bringing the biggest education reforms in India after 34 years. This landmark decision aims to transform the Indian education system, introducing a new structure, revised board exams, flexible degree programs, and a focus on regional languages.
New Education Structure (5+3+3+4 Format)
The traditional 10+2 system is now replaced with a modern 5+3+3+4 education model to align with global standards.
🔹 Foundational Stage (5 years): Nursery (4 years) to Class 2 (8 years)
🔹 Preparatory Stage (3 years): Class 3 (9 years) to Class 5 (11 years)
🔹 Middle Stage (3 years): Class 6 (12 years) to Class 8 (14 years)
🔹 Secondary Stage (4 years): Class 9 (15 years) to Class 12 (18 years)
Major Changes & Key Features
✅ 10th Board Exams Removed: Board exams will now be conducted only for Class 12.
✅ MPhil Degree Abolished: Students can directly pursue PhD after MA.
✅ College Degree Now Flexible:
- 1 Year: Certificate
- 2 Years: Diploma
- 3 Years: Degree
- 4 Years: Honors Degree (eligible for 1-year MA)
✅ Multilingual Learning: Education up to Class 5 will be in the mother tongue, regional or national language. English will be taught as a subject.
✅ Semester System from Class 9: Just like colleges, Class 9-12 will follow the semester system.
✅ Higher Education Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) Target: Aims to increase GER to 50% by 2035.
✅ E-Learning & Digital Push: - Introduction of E-courses in regional languages
- Establishment of Virtual Labs
- Creation of National Educational Technology Forum (NETF)
✅ Same Rules for All Institutions: Government, Private, and Deemed Universities will follow uniform regulations.
